How to Shave Like a Pro: A Step-by-Step Guide to Traditional Wet Shaving

Guest Writer Series |

Traditional wet shaving is more than a grooming method—it's a mindful ritual that delivers a superior shave, reduces irritation, and connects you with time-tested techniques. Whether you're new to safety razors or looking to fine-tune your approach, this guide will walk you through everything you need to shave like a pro.

🧰 What You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you’ve got the essentials:

  • A double-edge safety razor
  • A shaving brush (boar, badger, or synthetic)
  • Shaving soap or cream
  • Double-edge razor blades
  • A soothing aftershave

You can find all of these at The Razor Company.

🧼 Step-by-Step Shaving Routine

1. Prep Your Face

Wash your face with warm water to remove oils and soften your beard. For best results, shave after a shower or apply a warm towel to your face for 2–3 minutes.

2. Load and Lather

Use your brush to load shaving soap or cream. You can build lather in a bowl, on your palm, or directly on your face—whichever feels best.

3. Shave with the Grain

Using a light touch, shave in the direction your hair grows. Keep your razor at roughly a 30° angle and let the razor do the work—no pressure needed.

4. Re-Lather and Go Again (Optional)

If you want a closer shave, re-lather and go across or even against the grain. Always listen to your skin—comfort over closeness.

5. Rinse and Finish

Splash your face with cold water to close pores, then pat dry and apply an aftershave to soothe and hydrate your skin.
