Razor Blade Care 101: How to Extend the Life of Your Blades

Guest Writer Series |

If you’re a fan of traditional wet shaving, you know the importance of a sharp razor blade. A dull blade can cause irritation, razor burn, and even ingrown hairs. But did you know that proper care can extend the life of your blades, saving you money in the long run? Here are some tips for razor blade care 101:

1. Dry your blade after use.

After you’ve finished shaving, rinse your blade thoroughly with warm water to remove any shaving cream or hair. Then, dry the blade thoroughly with a towel or cloth. Moisture can cause the blade to rust, which will dull the blade quickly. Avoid leaving the blade in the shower or near water to prevent unnecessary moisture.

2. Store your blade properly.

Storing your blade in a dry place can also help prevent rusting. Avoid storing your blade in the shower or near water. Instead, keep your blade in a dry area, such as a medicine cabinet or on a razor stand. This will not only help prevent rust but also help prevent damage to the blade from being dropped or knocked over.

3. Use a blade oil.

Blade oil can help protect your razor blade from rust and corrosion. Before storing your blade, apply a few drops of blade oil to the blade and rub it in. This will create a protective layer that will help prevent rust and corrosion. Be sure to wipe off any excess oil before using the blade again.

4. Clean your blade with alcohol.

To remove any bacteria or debris from your blade, clean it with rubbing alcohol. Simply pour a small amount of alcohol onto a cotton ball and gently wipe the blade. This will help prevent infection and keep your blade clean and sharp.

5. Replace your blade regularly.

Even with proper care, razor blades will eventually become dull and need to be replaced. How often you need to replace your blade depends on several factors, including how often you shave and the thickness of your hair. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to replace your blade after 5-7 shaves. This will ensure that you’re always using a sharp blade that will give you the closest, most comfortable shave possible.

By following these simple tips for razor blade care, you can extend the life of your blades and ensure that you’re always getting the best possible shave. So, take good care of your razor and enjoy a close, comfortable shave every time.

In regards to blades, is there, in essence, four (4) sides to a safety razor?
If I shave 5-7 times with a razor on ONLY ONE SIDE (without turning the handle over to use the other side), could I then use the other side of the razor and after 5-7 times FLIP the safety razor OVER so the top is now the bottom. Could I technically then get 5-7 more on each “side” 🤔?
