Scented markers, old books, lunch-room milk, it all combines into a distinctive scent memory, the kind of thing that transports you back to being a kid almost instantly. But, more than anything else, people remember the smell of pencils.

Grade school pencils have a distinct aroma, a kind of pulpy, mineral cedar, accented by the roasted character imparted by the grinding of wall-mounted, hand-cranked pencil sharpeners. The sappy, woody tang of tens of thousands of cheap, mass-produced pencils is one of our fondest, most distinctive memories of childhood. That's the smell of Pencil Pushers. That's the smell of home.
