History: The Cherokee call a portion of the French Broad River Tahkeeosteh, loosely translated to racing waters. The French Broad River begins in Transylvania County, NC traveling North through the Asheville area before hooking over to Tennessee. It is considered one of the world’s oldest rivers. It was a major source of commerce in the area with the Buncombe County (where Black Mountain resides) Turnpike being developed to serve trade along its shores.
